YOUTH RUNNING FROM CARE

ABOUT THE TRAINING
This training will explore the reasons youth choose to leave foster or residential situations. A comparison will be made between youth leaving "intact" families and those leaving an out-of-home placement. Relevant reserarch and NRS' Let's Talk: Runaway Prevention Curriculum will guide discussion of prevention of first-time and future runaway incidents. Staff attitudes and beliefs regarding youth who run froom placement will be addressd throughout the training.

ISSUDES COVERED:
> Characteristics of runaways, including early "warning" signs
> Characteristics of chronic or repeat runners
> Discussion of youth running from intact families versus residentiaL program
> Techniques to de-escalate a crisis situation that could lead to a runaway incident
> Steps a guardian or program should take to report and locate a missing youth
> Preparations for a youth's return, including communication skills and meeting the youth's basic needs
> Information and materials from NRS's runaway prevention curriculum as a method of discussing runaway prevention with youth at-risk and their caregivers
> Managing staff and caregiver emotions regarding youth who run from care.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIAGNOSTIC AND STATISTICAL MANUAL (DSM-IV-TR) The Basics
This training is offered in collaboration with Children's Home+Aid and Lawrence Hall Youth Services.

ABOUT THE TRAINING:
Individuals will learn how to use the 4th Edition (Text Revision) of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-1V TR) with its multi-axial system for diagnosing various psychopathological disorders. Identifying basic psychopathology and distinguishing between normal adjustment problems and enduring psychopathology will also be reviewed.

TOPICS COVERED:
. Review DSM-IV TR
. Review Multi-axial system as outlined in the DSM-IV TR
. Review psychopathology
. Review how to use the DSM-IV TR to develop a clinical treatment plan.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This workshop is intended for non-clinical staff who are seeking a general understanding of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV-TR.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Michael Bland, Psy.D.; D. Min.
Dr. Michael Bland has earned a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) and a Doctorate in Ministry (D. Min.) in pastoral counseling. He is a clinical professional counselor at the Center for Psychological Services and is on the faculty at Loyola University, Institute of Pastoral Studies Graduate Program. He is currently the President of the Board of Directors at Turning Point Behavioral Health Care and served as a founding member of the National Review Board of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2002-2007. The purpose of the National Review Board is preventing the sexual abuse of minors by persons in the service of the Church

ABOUT THE TRAINING
New designer drugs such as "bath salt cocaine (MDPV) and "synthetic marijuana" (JWH-018) have become a popular alternative to classic illicit drugs. Youth services professionals need to stay current with the changing nature of youth substance abuse.

This half-day seminar will provide adolescent service professionals with detailed information on two of the newest drug trends among adolescents: "synthetic marijuana" potpourri and "bath salt cocaine". Informative Power Point slides detailing the pharmacology and legal status of these new drugs will be complemeted by video of actual adolescent abusers. Over-the-counter drug abuse of DXM will be presented with a video interview of a recovering adolescent DXM addict.

Participants will review the unique eye clues and matching body symptoms of persons under the influence of drugs and will learn the limitations of urine drug testing in light of today's synthetic designer-drug trend. The most recent drug seizure data for Cook County will also be presented.

OBJECTIVES:
Participant will be able to describe/define:
. The differences between "bath salt cocaine" (MDPV)and cocaine; and "K2/Spice synthetic marijuana" and marijuana.
. The legal status of of MDPV and JWH-018 in Illinois.
. The limitations of urine drug testing as it applies to MDPV and JWH-018.
. The physical and mental impact of over-the counter drug abuse among adolescents.
. The symptoms of stimulant,narcotic, and marijuana drug intoxication.
. The most frequently seized drugs by Cook County area police in 2011.
