    3rd Annual Derby Night Sponsors
On May 15th, 2010, the Lawrence Hall Junior Board held their 3rd Annual “A Derby Night” fundraiser. The evening included horse races, raffle prizes, a silent auction, hors-d’oeuvres and refreshments, and raised over $14,000 to support the activities of the Junior Board. This year’s event was held in elegance and style as over 150 supporters of the Junior Board gathered at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in full Derby regalia to bet on the races for a chance at extra raffle tickets. The fundraiser was a huge success, coming in well over budget, and members of the Junior Board are excited to begin scheduling programming with the clients this summer, including beach activities, batting cages and golf, trips to Great America, and much, much more to fulfill their mission of enriching the lives of the children and young adults in Lawrence Hall’s care.

    WHAT IS THE JUNIOR BOARD?

The Junior Board is composed of mostly young, urban professionals who volunteer to spend time and mentor the children in the residential treatment program. Groups of volunteers will plan and coordinate monthly activities in which we mentor the children by building their life skills. Junior Board members use their own skill, talents and experiences to expose the children to opportunities not typically offered to them. Many of our volunteers are also involved in our tutoring program on a weekly basis.

WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITIES DOES THE JUNIOR BOARD DO?
    Junior Board 2006 Bowl-A-Thon
The Junior Board organizes a variety of life skill building activities for the youth including the following:

    • Visiting a Trading Floor

    • Interview Training and Resume Writing

    • Eating Healthy Workshop

    • Work on a Political Campaign

    • Volunteering at a 5K Water Station

    • Apartment Search

    • Working with a Physical Trainer

    • Behind the Scenes Tour of a local Theater

    • Conducting a “Power of Savings” Seminar

    • Professional Kitchen Tour

    • River Day Clean-Up

    • Visiting an Architecture Office

WHAT KIND OF COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED?

The commitment to youth and to the Junior Board requires attending a monthly activity that lasts about 2-4 hours. Members can also be involved in leadership positions with the Junior Board including serving as an officer, organizing a fundraising event or assisting with new member recruitment. There are also tutoring opportunities that require a weekly 2 hour commitment for the length of the school year.

    HOW DO I JOIN?

Because the Junior Board involves working with children, all volunteers must complete an application, provide references, submit to a background check and go through orientation. If you are interested in joining the Junior Board, please contact Lawrence Hall's Institutional Advancement Department at development@lawrencehall.org for an application.

    TESTIMONIAL
Volunteering with Lawrence Hall has made a significant impact in my life, by allowing me to share the gifts that my parents have given me. You cannot become a volunteer and not immediately feel connected to the kids and watching them grow. Social and civic responsibility begins today, so please join us in making the difference in the lives of our children and their futures.
