TRAINER: Prem Pahwa, LCSW
TARGET AUDIENCE: Therapists, Caseworkerss, Unit Staff, and Directors

Working with youth and families impacted by violence and trauma has a cumulative and transformative effect on helpers-both positive and negative. Vicarious traumatization or "compassion fatigue" may leave helpers feeling powerless, depleted, cynical, and numb. The session will explore: how exposure to traumatic client material makes helpers more vulnerable to compassion fatigue; characteristics and strategies that make caregivers more resilient; and will provide an opportunity for participants to develop a prevention and self-care plan.

GOAL: To normalize, validate, and support staff who experience any degree of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue in their work with at risk youth.

OBJECTIVES:
. Define burnout, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious traumatization, and compassion fatigue.
. Understand personal vulnerabilities for developing compassion fatigue.
. Develop self-care plan to prevent compassion fatigue.

3.0 CEU Credits. No partial credit is provided. You must attend the full session in order to receive CEU credit.

Lesbian/Gay/BI/Trans/Questioning (LGBTQ) Certification Program
LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) youth face unique challenges in child welfare settings. The complex task of learning to manage a stigmatized identify, amplified by all-too-frequent encounters with discrimination, ostracism, harassment, abandonment or abuse based on sexual orientation gender identity or gender expression, place LGBTQ youth at greater risk for a range of psychological and interpersonal difficulties. These experiences may also intensify the effects of other types of trauma and complicate psychological recovery. This unique 6-day training offers child welfare staff an in-depth knowledge of the unique needs and experiences of LGBTQ youth, strategies for facilitating the successful integration of key components of identity, and the ability to create a safe and respectful environment that fosters healing and growth.

In collaboration with Children's Home and Aid, Live Oak, Inc., and LHYS, we are offering this six-month certification training series for staff! Space is limited, so register soon! For those individuals who missed one or more sessions in the 2007 series, you have the opportunity to make them up this year to receive full certification.

Session locations will alternate between LHYS and Children's Home and Aid.
